How can we help?
For the 7th year we continued with our successful Employment Day and Work Placement Schemes, which we operate in collaboration with a number of our housing clients including Notting Hill, Swan and the members of the Housing Associations’ Legal Alliance.
Our Employment Days are aimed at helping residents become ‘work ready’. Our staff run a series of training sessions followed by mock interviews and then feedback to participants with hints and suggestions about what they did well and where they might improve how they come across at interview. Then, under our Work Placement Scheme, a number of participants join us through our six-monthly paid internships. We were delighted to welcome Nana Bentil as our latest addition to our General Office team through the scheme.
We also get to see the great results that our chosen charities can achieve with the money that we raise. This October, Nathan and Lily, two young people with whom Action for Kids have worked for many years, start their new full-time jobs at Sainsbury’s. That means that, of the 10 young people that joined us at our sponsored Wide Horizons Skills for Life weekend last year, 7 are now in fully paid work, with the remaining three volunteering. We are so proud that we have helped to make that difference.
After five years of winning Platinum at the Clean City Awards, we have also now been nominated for their highest accolade, the Chairman’s Cup. Following this year’s efforts, we are now recycling 92% of all our office’s waste, saving 14 trees and 2 tonnes of CO2 per month.
Fundraising and Charitable Giving
We are incredibly grateful to all of our staff, clients and friends who have given so generously to our many fundraising ventures which this year ranged from baking competitions (combined with a cake sale) to a calory-burning cycle ride to Paris (and back). On 30 April we handed cheques totaling £41,448 to our chosen charities.
Our chosen charities
Action for Kids – “Community support and social responsibility is embedded into the ethos at Devonshires. They operate in a truly inclusive and accessible way in employment, the environment and with the community. When we ask for support, the response is always phenomenal.” Lyn Prodger, Action for Kids
Theatre Royal Stratford East – “The commitment, enthusiasm and generosity of Devonshires has been invaluable to us and the community we work with. It has been a pleasure to watch our young people flourish as artists and cultural leaders through our relationship.” Asma Hussain, Theatre Royal Stratford East
Friends of the Elderly – “Devonshires have been a fantastic partner already – and it’s still early days! An enthusiastic team of volunteers gave up their Saturday to help us set up a summer fete at one of our care homes, and Nicki, Nadine and Carolyn braved the London Triathlon for us raising over £2,000! All donations will go towards our vital befriending and grants services, to help isolated and lonely older people and those living in poverty, for which we are so grateful.” Yvonne Martin, Friends of the Elderly
