Ministers announce £10m scheme for disadvantaged pupils

Friday, 13 July 2012

Ministers have announced a new £10m scheme, funded by the pupil premium, to offer disadvantaged pupils extra lessons to ensure they reach Level 4 in English prior to starting secondary school.

Figures show that there were approximately 100,000 pupils that failed to reach this level last year.

The first projects will commence in September 2012 and will aim to bridge the gap between primary and secondary schools ensuring a smoother transition and reducing the disparity in achievement between these pupils and their wealthier classmates.
