Trainees

Our Search and Selection Criteria

We march to a different beat.

We look to take on recruits who not only come from a variety of backgrounds but who also have that “je ne sais quoi!”

You may have just graduated with a law degree, or, perhaps like some of our previous trainees, you are someone who is looking for a complete career change.

You will have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) before starting your training contract. If you have studied a non-law degree, you will have completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).

Personal qualities and academic qualifications

Demonstrating your desire to pursue a career as a solicitor with Devonshires will be paramount. To stand out from the rest, you will need to be a good team player, with a can do, will do work ethic – whether that’s doing stimulating work or the more mundane but no less essential tasks. You will need to be diligent and willing to put in the hours when needed.

You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to foster good relationships with colleagues and clients, plenty of adaptability, enthusiasm, energy and ambition. A common sense approach will stand you in good stead.

Academic excellence is essential and you will need to demonstrate a strong academic background, which should include a 2:1 or higher degree classification. We welcome applications from graduates and undergraduates from a broad range of backgrounds and degree disciplines.

Above all, we’re looking for people who get on with people! This is important to us because we strive to be helpful expert lawyers that our clients enjoy working with. Your commitment and drive towards progressing a career in law must shine through and we would certainly recommend you do your research into our law firm and our niche market and have good reasons for wanting to work with us.

Non-UK applicants

You will need to have achieved comparable high academic results in your equivalent examinations, and be on track for the equivalent of a 2:1 degree. You should also be eligible to work in the UK – unfortunately we are unable to help with work permit applications.
