The Interview

We receive several hundred applications each year so competition is tough.

You will need to demonstrate that you have what it takes to be a trainee with us ~ one hat does not fit all!

At interview you will be expected to share your experiences and achievements; academically; professionally and personally in areas such as:

Work experience – this need not be legal work experience, but some commercial exposure will help your application. We want to engage people who are motivated by the prospect of working in a business environment.

Commercial awareness – in essence, we are looking for people who appreciate we are business practitioners, not just expert legal advisors. We encourage you to improve your commercial awareness by taking an interest in current affairs, reading the trade press and researching topical issues which affect the legal sector and our clients.

Communication skills – this skill is at the forefront of being an effective solicitor. We want people who can communicate with empathy, understanding and who have an influencing but pragmatic approach.

Client care – this is the cornerstone of what makes Devonshires the success it is today. Demonstrating an understanding of our clients needs, wants and expectations is paramount and fostering long term client relationships is essential.

Extra curricular activities – it goes without saying that we encourage you to achieve a healthy balance between work and academics. Participating in a range of activities, such as music, sport and culture will help your application.

Understanding the role of a solicitor and the legal profession – you will need to demonstrate a strong career focus and be able to convince us that you have made an informed choice when deciding to apply to Devonshires.
