Government Publishes Consultation on New Court Dedicated to Housing

The Government has published a consultation on establishing a new court dedicated to housing. The consultation will run until 22 January 2019.

We urge all providers to consider submitting a response to the consultation which seeks views and opinions on the courts and tribunals in property cases, including the possibility of a dedicated specialist housing court.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government proposes a new court to “provide a single path of redress in property cases” and merge disputes which are presently being dealt with across numerous platforms in the County Court, First-tier Tribunal Property Chamber, General Regulatory Chamber and the High Court.

The overhaul was first proposed in 2017 and forms part of a wider government focus on housing, including leasehold reform, social housing and housing consumers.
