Areas of expertise

Lewis advises public and private sector clients on commercial contracts, infrastructure projects and energy matters. 

He has broad experience advising on, negotiating and drafting commercial contracts, particularly those relating to supply of goods and services, technology and commercial collaborations. He works closely with clients to understand their markets and drivers of risk and revenue, delivering practical, commercially focused advice tailored to their objectives. 

He also has significant experience advising on PFI and other long-term infrastructure arrangements, including contract variations, operational issues and project documentation. 

Lewis is developing a particular focus on energy projects and heat networks, building on his experience advising on electricity network connection and construction arrangements. 

Experience

Before joining Devonshires, Lewis worked as in-house counsel for Lloyd's Register and OneOcean, a marine and offshore-energy services and software business.

He previously practiced in Addleshaw Goddard’s Infrastructure, Projects and Energy team and gained management experience with an SME in the property restoration sector, helping shape his practical, commercially focused approach to legal advice.

Personal

Lewis is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and enjoys working with clients on international matters. Outside work, he enjoys Formula One, football (he supports Manchester United and regularly goes to Old Trafford to have his patience tested), swimming, Pilates and travelling, particularly when it provides an opportunity to practice his languages. 

Professional memberships

Lewis is a dual-qualified solicitor. He has been admitted to the roll of solicitors in the Republic of Ireland and is a member of the Law Society of Ireland.

Notable cases

Advised on the establishment and ongoing expansion of a joint venture between Lloyd's Register and five Greek shipowners to develop emissions-reduction technologies for the maritime sector. Drafted and negotiated the joint venture agreement, secondment agreements, confidentiality arrangements and related documentation, including amendments to admit new participants to the collaboration.

Drafted a suite of interdependent agreements for an international technology accelerator programme, including a joint venture agreement with the programme partner, programme participation agreements with technology companies and multi-party project participation agreements governing collaborative research and development projects.

Managed a high-volume contracting workflow for an electricity transmission client, overseeing the drafting and negotiation of bilateral connection and construction agreements. Drawing on the process improvement and project management skills developed through his MBA, Lewis streamlined the contracting process to improve efficiency and consistency, ensuring the timely completion of deliverables.

Managed a project to consolidate and modernise the contractual terms for dozens of software products following the merger of two software businesses, in order to rationalise multiple legacy contract forms into a consistent contractual framework.

Advised on amendments to a PFI hospital project to facilitate the addition of two new clinical wards, drafting variations to the project agreement, operations and maintenance subcontract and associated project documentation.
